Subject notes
A hollow casting such as a bomb needed a core inside the mould so that the space would not fill with molten iron. Cores were made from moulding sand in two halves which were then glued together and baked in a stove. It was often women's work.
The photograph is from 'Munition Work Record. The Falkirk Iron Coy, Ltd, 1915-1918.' Much of the munitions were produced at its Castlelaurie Foundry.
