Object detail

Administrative History
The Dean of Guild Court was responsible for planning and building regulations in the Burgh. The origins of the Dean of Guild Court were in the medieval Royal Burghs. Their powers to hear offences against neighbourliness gradually evolved into modern planning and building control regulations.
From 1862 Town Councils were permitted to set up Dean of Guild Courts and from 1892 all town councils were required to set up Dean of Guild Courts. The Dean of Guild Courts had powers to impose conditions relating to public health under the 1862 Police Act.
The contents and range of planning records are affected by the 1947 Town & Country Planning (Scotland) Act and by planning legislation in 1964.
