Production date
1914-1919
Description
Metal badge with the a sailing ship on part of a globe within a laurel wreath frame surmounted by a crown. The words "DRAKE" and "AUXILIO DIVINO" are incorporated into the design. Silver colour.
"AUXILIO DIVINO" meaning with Gods help. The badge is from the Royal Naval Division 1st (Drake) battalion and it was formed in August 1914 from naval reserve forces when the fleet was fully crewed. They were created to supplement the army and served on land but remained under the Admiralty. In 1916 they were redesigned the 63rd (RN) Division and were supplemented by army battalions but retained their naval traditions. There was an attempt to disband them in 1917 but it was not until 1919 that the RND were finally disbanded.
