Subject notes
Kinneil House was built in 1546-50 by James Hamilton, second Earl of Arran and extended in 1677 by Anne, Duchess of Hamilton. This led to Kinneil and Bo'ness being elected a burgh of regality and being granted the free port status upon which Bo'ness's prosperity was built.

From the early 18th century the house was little used. It became derelict but was saved from demolition in 1936 when contractors found tempera decoration on the plaster behind the 17th century panelling and ceiling. The corner turrets were re-roofed circa 1980.
