Description
An old man with white beard, James Robertson from Laurieston, sits on one of his home made bicycles. He is wearing a Tam-o'-Shanter, jacket and striped trousers The bike is driven by pedals acting directly on the front wheel. The wheels have metal tyres. There are no brakes other than the pedals.
Buildings (possibly the rear of Mary Street, Laurieston, where he lived) in background, black dog to the left of the picture.

The modern bicycle with the pedal crank at the bottom of the frame driving the rear wheel through gears and chain was introduced in 1888, when metal that was strong and light enough became available. The bike shown here is of an much earlier design and was home-made.
