medal; "Women's Voluntary Service Medal" (W.V.S.)
WVS Service Medal. Silver coloured medal with a bar suspended from a red, white, green, white & red ribbon. The obverse bears the monogram WVS within an ivy wreath. The reverse shows three flower stems of rosemary in the centre around which are the words "SERVICE BEYOND SELF". Set in a green and gold hinged case with red and white interior. Inside the lid are the coat-of-arms of the Royal Mint.
These medals were awarded to members of the Women's Voluntary Services who completed 40 duties during a period of 15 years. The medal was instituted on 23 March 1961and was renamed the Women's Royal Service Medal in 1966.
