Description
View of living room, four apartment house, Westquarter. On the right is the range comprising an open coal fire, oven and warming oven. On the mantelpiece is an alarm clock and two matching equestrian ornaments. There is a framed photograph hanging on the wall of a soldier in kilt and glengarry. A pendulum clock hangs on the opposite wall. There are two sideboards and a table with chairs and a leather armchair. The floor is covered in highly polished linoleum and rugs. There is a single electric light bulb in the centre of the room. Taken as part of record of replacement of slum housing by Westquarter Model Village, built by Stirling County Council

The houses were an immense improvement on the rows, as they were larger and equipped with running water, inside toilets and electric light. However, the only means of cooking was the range and at 6d a unit, the electric light was so expensive that 30% of houses reverted to paraffin lamps.
