Subject notes
John G Stein opened the brickworks in 1904. The kiln was the longest in the world at over 300 metres. Stein was born in 1862 and rose from apprentice to become the biggest manufacturer in Scotland. In 1927 he grazed his shin on a brick and died of blood poisoning.
