medal; "War Merit Cross"

Production date
1939-1945
Description
Corroded and damaged War Merit Cross from the German army. Made of zinc. It consists of a narrow straight armed cross pattee with V-ends, with crossed swords in the angles. The obverse depicts a swastika in a wreath, whilst the reverse has the date 1939 in a similar location. It was found in a canvas bag on the coastal path between Carriden and Blackness, together with 2000-34-3 & 4.
This award was created by Adolf Hitler in 1939 as a successor to the non-combatant Iron Cross which was used in earlier wars (same medal but with a different ribbon). This is a second class War Merit Cross.
