Subject notes
Each leaf is cantilevered out from meticulously coursed masonry. Its highest leaf is 15 metres above the ground. Inside the pineapple is a small circular room with tall windows and a bottle-shaped roof. The pineapple is a folly (a building built in estate grounds for its visual interest rather than usefulness). It was built by the 4th Earl of Dunmore in c1776 on his return from being firstly Governor of New York and then Virginia, before the American War of Independence. In the American South, a pineapple on a post was a sign of welcome (and when turned upside down, a sign that guests should go).
