Administrative History
The Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Co Ltd built a railway to link Glasgow and Edinburgh under an Act of Parliament of 1838. The line opened in 1842, initially between Glasgow Dundas St (re-named Queen St) and Edinburgh Haymarket. The line was extended to Edinburgh General in 1846 and additional branches were built later. The line was absorbed into the North British Railway on 1 August 1865.
The Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway Co also owned the Edinburgh & Glasgow Union Canal. The Canal company was originally incorporated under Act of Parliament of 27 June 1817, and was vested in the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway Company by Act of Parliament of 1849.
