Description
Apron of the Dennyloanhead Free Gardeners. A small black square of cloth bordered with gold braid. It bears the initials P, G, H, E, for the four rivers of the Garden of Eden (the Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel (Tigris) and Euphrates) and A,N,S, O - the initials of Adam, Noah and Solomon, and the O is assumed to be Olive with an image of the ark of the covenant at the bottom. An arc of blue cloth hangs over the square one. It has a gold fringe with tassels and bears the eye, square and dividers emblems. The blue cloth suspension belt has an S-shaped "snake" buckle.
The apron belonged to a collier at Dennyloanhead, in the 1890s. The Lodge held its meetings in a hall up Cuddie Brae.
The Order of the Free Gardener was founded in Scotland in the mid 17th century. Although similar to Freemasons they have always been independant of them.
