The sausage lamp bulb an early form of electric heater c1890 invented by Herbert John Dowsing c1859-1931. Enclosed carbon filaments in glass bulbs with reddish iron oxide coating to create a cosy atmosphere. Carron Co must have had a license to make this type, c1900, which was superseded by the cheaper open coiled wire type developed by Belling from c1912, a claim made in The Story of Belling 1912-62. Coiled wire heaters have themselves been replaced by glass enclosed elements popular again today in convection type heaters.
