In his discussion of Roman harness Bishop has commented that these fittings "are common throughout the two Germanies and Britain and appear to date from Julio-Claudian up to Hadrianic times" (Bishop 1988, 100). Such hooks were used in groups of four (eg Lincoln: Webster 1949, pl.Xa) or three (Colchester: Hawkes & Hull 1947, 339).
