Alexander Fleming, wheelwright at work.

Maker

Production date

Description
Alexander Fleming working outside a single-storey building with a water butt in the corner. A long-handled hammer lies near him and to his right is a heavy wheel with a crank. Behind him lie two bicycles with solid rubber tyres.
The machine lying on the ground in the fore ground of the photo appears to be a very early type of bicycle where the drive mechanism is a straight pedal drive to the front wheel and there is no chain drive to the back wheel. The bicycle leaning on the water butt behind the Wheelwright is also an early design but does have a chain drive to the back wheel although it does not appear to have any brakes.
This is believed to be a Mr. Alexander Fleming at work in Silver Row, Falkirk.

The bicycle with pedals located at the bottom of the frame driving the rear wheel through a chain, was called the 'safety bicycle' in contrast to the penny-farthing. The other bicycle is an older design with pedals on the front axle.
