View of Bo'ness Dock. A ketch with two masts fore-and-aft rigged is moored to the dockside. It is the 'Gluckauf', registered in Lubeck, Germany. Larger steam-powered tramp ships are moored further along. On the far side is a three-masted sailing ship.

Bo'ness Harbour was tidal which made it inconvenient for the loading and unloading of ships. The non-tidal Dock was built in 1881 and provided 730 metres of quay wall. The dock gates were opened for the passage of ships twice a day, at high tide.
