clock; long case

Maker
Dalgleish, Robert
Production date
1805-1832
Description
A long case 8 day striking clock by Robert Dalgleish, with calendar. It has an arched moulded hood with foliate crest enclosing a 12 1/4 inch brass dial in a silvered chapter ring and subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture. The trunk has an arched door and panel base on bun feet.
The National Museums thought the case might not be original. Expert examination of the clock in January 2002 ascertained that the clock case is of an Aberdeen pattern and dates from the first decade of the nineteenth century. The movement is original but was probably made in Glasgow and Dalgleish added his name as the retailer - not an uncommon practice. It probably dates to the late eighteenth century so implies that Dalgleish was a clock retailer before he started work as a clockmaker.
