Description
A jug of flared form printed in lilac and painted in colours with two fishwives inscribed 'Caller Herrin' and 'Caller Ou'. The dish is printed with two fishwives inscribed 'Caller Herrin'
Caller Herrin means fresh herring and Caller Ou is fresh oysters. It was the traditional call for the Newhaven fishwives and a song from c1798, which has been adapted many times and became popular c1820s.
No back stamp but these were part of the Links pottery range and frequently are not stamped, they tend to be dated to c1850s.
