Subject notes
SS Ituna was a steel screw steamer of 408 tons built at Grangemouth. Steamships continued to be fitted with sails until the end of the 19th century. When the wind was favourable, sails were used to reduce the consumption of coal. Ituna had London owners until 1897 when she was sold to Scandinavian owners until 1920 and finally sold to Maltese owners. In 1921 on a voyage from Piraeus with a cargo of flour she struck a First World War mine and sank near Cape Santa Maria di Leuca on the heel of Italy.
