Subject notes
A teapot sits on the range and there is a paraffin lamp on the mantelpiece. Items of clothing dry near the open fire which is burning brightly. The table is covered in bowls and cups. There is a zinc bath and several pails.

The black mark in the wall paper above the fire suggests that the room was sometimes filled with smoke. Perhaps it had not been swept. The pails may have been needed because the roof leaked or to bring water from the well in the street.
