samian; decorated

Description
Decorated body sherd from a bowl. Form 37, Central Gaulish (2002-42-44). A small fragment of panel decoration separated by bead rows with small cup-like terminals. There is a basal groove with slight cordon above. The one complete panel contains the cupid, O.440 used by a variety of potters, mainly of Hadrianic and Antonine date. Above is a panel consisting of a wreathed festoon (possibly Rogers 1974, F42) containing a ?mask. The larger panel to the right may have contained a standing figure with a spear. Both cupid and wreath appear in work ascribed to Carantinus I and he also uses a small cup as a terminal, cf. Rogers 1999, Pl.21, 6. c.A.D.120-160. [F109.]
