Subject notes
The surface is covered in peat and glacial gravels. Below them are beds of sandstone and coal. Coal measures in the Falkirk area are found in the Carboniferous Coal Measures and in the older Carboniferous Limestone Series. see locality field card.
As excavating machines became more powerful it was possible to mine coal just below the surface by stripping of the top cover rather than sinking a mine shaft as had to be the approach earlier even for such seams. The mine is now closed.
