Subject notes
The dyke is of quartz dolerite dating from the Carboniferous period. Dykes are formed of igneous rock which was intruded into the vertical joints of older sedimentary rocks. As the dyke is harder than the sedimentary rock it has been left prominent following erosion of the surrounding rock by glaciers.
