Subject notes
Sills are formed when molten magma is intruded along the horizontal plane of sedimentary rocks, and dykes are formed where the intrusion is up vertical joints. As the rock cools it contracts and can cause columnar jointing. The rock is very hard and therefore yields poor soils.

The sill which runs east-west through Myot Hill was quarried at Northfield. The whinstone was used for kerbs and setts. Fragmented rock was used as aggregate.
