Description
Enamelled tie pin consisting of a round St Andrew's cross surrounded by a red border in which are the words "HMYOI/ POLMONT"; the whole surmounted by a crown. Her Majesty's Young Offenders Institute.
During the 1980s and 90s many police forces and prisons throughout the UK produced tie pins which related to their own force or prison establishment. The pins were very rarely officially sanctioned, and in a few establishments were even banned staff from wearing any on their ties. The pins were usually produced by members of staff as a
means of raising funds for local charities, staff welfare funds etc. As the number of each badge produced was usually between 100 and 1000, they were obviously much sought after, not only from within their own area but throughout the whole collecting fraternity in the UK. This one was produced by Jeeves the jewellers (Liverpool). They made high quality badges but they also cost considerably more than those produced by other firms. It is therefore assumed that only about 100 of this badge would have been made, and the vast majority of those would have been sold to staff at the prison.
