seed sower

Description
Red painted wooden frame with cloth bag attached and metal spinner. Separate bow. "THE AERO/ RECD/ BROADCAST/ SEED SOWER/ D L K".
Seed fiddles have been used for about 250 years to sow seeds. This one was used at Rottenstocks Farm, Slammanan. The seed fiddle was invented to replace hand broadcasting in the eighteenth century. It was named for its obvious similarities to the violin. The box contained about 3kg of seed which trickled down in a continual stream into the rotating discs which spun left and right alternately with the movement of the bow. The seeds were then scattered in a wide arc about the sower with that movement. Seed fiddles were sold until quite recently and were used to sow small amounts of grass and clover seed.
