Subject notes
Greeting is a Scots word for crying. The two faces of this bridge look in opposite directions: the Laughing face towards the simpler construction work east and the Greeting face towards the more difficult construction work of a tunnel and flights of locks to the west.

The canal company was forced by Callendar Estates to build the tunnel under Prospect Hill, so that it could not be seen from Callendar House. It is the only canal tunnel in Scotland and is 630m long. It was cut through solid rock and was very drippy.
