View from the east of the stone arch bridge with a smiling face on the keystone and '61 1821' carved in a plaque above it. The bridge is number 61 counting out from Edinburgh and it was built in 1821.This photo is not scanned. You can see the original in the Archives in Callendar House

Greeting is a Scots word for crying. The two faces of this bridge look in opposite directions: the Laughing face towards the simpler construction work east and the Greeting face towards the more difficult construction work of a tunnel and flights of locks to the west.
