Description
The obverse shows the crowed head of King George VI, with legend “GEORGIVS : G : BR : OMN : REX ET INDIAE IMP”. The reverse bears the image of a lion, facing left, trampling on a monster having both an eagle’s and a serpent’s head with the talons and scales of a dragon. The lion’s forepaw rest on the eagles head. The dates “1939” and “1945” appear above the lion. The ribbon has vertical stripes of red, white and blue, the colours of the Union Flag.
The War Medal was awarded to full-time personnel of the Armed Forces of the British Commonwealth (excluding the Home Guard) wherever they served during the war; the qualification being twenty-eight days' service, operational or non-operational. In the Merchant Navy the twenty-eight days must have been served at sea. The period covered by service was 3 September 1939 to 2 September 1945. A few categories of civilians, such as war correspondents and civil air transport air crews who had served or flown in operational theatres, received the award.
