Description
Brass button badge consisting of an oval panel bearing the words "ON WAR SERVICE 1915" surrounding a shield with three cannons. All surmounted by a crown.
These badges were issued to civilians during the First World War to indicate that they were doing important war work. Several were officially produced and distributed (such as this one) others were produced privately. They were produced as before conscription in 1916 it was assumed that men not working were avoiding joining up. These badges were worn to show they were doing their duty. They were issues to munitions and dock workers. The older versions had blue enamel but by 1915 most didn't due to the numbers being produced.
