brooch; pelta

Description
Pelta-shaped copper alloy mount, the tips of the arms are missing; a rectangular projection on the convex side (decorated with transverse ribs), conceals the fastening mechanism on the rear, which comprises two lugs with a broken perforation (D 2.5mm). The lack of a catchplate means this cannot be a brooch. It is a Romano-British mount, and may be a cavalry harness pendant; the shape is consistent with this, although the enamelled decoration is unusual as is the fastening system. There is a central circle with a hexafoil rosette in reserved metal defined by fields of blue enamel. Two triangular fields project from this down the arms. Around the circle, broadly mirroring the curve of the mount, are red enamelled fields terminating in reserved scroll designs in ovals at each end. A small triangular hollow on the central arm was also once enamelled. The scroll design is related to earlier Iron Age art; this mixing of Roman and local designs is typical of Romano-British objects.
