Subject notes
The bridge was built by Thomas Telford in 1819 and spans the River Spean. Telford was commissioned to survey Highland roads in 1801 and recommended the construction of a network of roads and bridges, and the Caledonian Canal. The purpose of better communications was no longer military but rather to reduce emigration. Telford thought this could be done by encouraging crofting and fishing rather than the swing to sheep farming.
