Subject notes
An open fire requires a good draught up the chimney. The 'granny' on top of the chimney pot increases the draught. The barrel is probably a water butt to collect rain off the roof. The cottage may not have had running water. Keeping hens was common. The Rothiemurchus forest, now in the Cairngorms National Park, once formed part of the extensive Caledonian Forest.
