Subject notes
Written records of the breed go back to the 18th century. It thrives on poor mountain land with high annual rainfall and cold winds where other cattle could not. Making the most of poor forage, calving outside and seldom housed, they make an important economic contribution to upland areas. The breed is no longer confined to the Highlands and there are now herds in many parts of the world.
