Drifters laid their nets so that they hung like a curtain in the water, trapping shoals of fish which swam into them. There were weights at the bottom of the net and floats at the top so that it hung vertically. Pittenweem forms an almost continuous East Neuk settlement with the other ports of St Monance, Anstruther and Cellardyke. These ports date back to mediaeval times. Historic trading with the low countries is reflected in the appearance of some of the buildings.
