Subject notes
The herring shoals migrated round Scotland from the west coast to the east and the shoals were followed by the fishing boat fleet. Ullapool is a planned village established by the British Fisheries Society in the late 18th century. Most of the boats using Ullapool came from the North-East using the Caledonian Canal. The pier has since been greatly extended and strengthened.
