Subject notes
John Paul, 'the father of the US Navy', was born at Arbigland in 1747. He emigrated to the British colonies in North America and at the outbreak of the American Revolution, joined the rebels and became a very successful naval commander. Arbigland House was built in the classical style in 1755. John Paul's father was a gardener on the estate. This was the family's cottage where John Paul was born. (He later added the name Jones to his own.)
