In the background are whitewashed rubblestone buildings. Yachts are moored offshore. Kirkcudbright is a former county town, established as a Royal Burgh in 1455. Its harbour, on the mouth of the River Dee, has always been important for fishing. The town has become an artists' colony, owing much to E J Hornell, a local man.
