Subject notes
To the left are whitewashed rubblestone buildings. Boats are moored offshore in the River Dee. The land on the opposite shore is flat parkland with broad-leaved trees. Kirkcudbright is a former county town, established as a Royal Burgh in 1455. Its harbour, on the mouth of the River Dee, has always been important for fishing. The town has become an artists' colony, owing much to E J Hornell, a local man.
