Subject notes
The surrounding ground is flat, framed by gently sloping hills, unlike the normal U-shaped valley topography of this glaciated region. The area, especially the uplands, have suffered depopulation for 150 years, and often several crofts are worked by one family. At this location and elevation, the crop is probably hay for animal fodder. Little use appears to be made of mechanisation. The farm income and size of fields would not justify investment in expensive machinery at this time.
