Subject notes
The railway line from Glasgow to Fort William was opened in 1894 and extended to Mallaig in 1901. It was hugely welcomed by the local population who demanded that the line come into the centre of Fort William. It was hoped the railway would bring prosperity to the West Highlands. It succeeded in providing fast transport south for the fishing industry, cutting the cost of coal so that it replaced peat for heating and cooking, and bringing tourists to the area.
