Subject notes
The Caledonian Canal linked three inland lochs to the sealochs at Inverness and Fort William, providing an east west passage which avoided the Pentland Firth. There was a pier and railway station at the canal entrance providing integrated transport. The ship has a vertical stem and funnel, suggesting it was old at the time of the photograph. It was probably laid up. The bridge and engines are amidships but the superstructure forms two 'islands' rather than the usual one.
