Subject notes
Thomas Telford was commissioned to survey Highland roads in 1801 and recommended the construction of a network of roads and bridges, and the Caledonian Canal. He was responsible himself for several projects in the locality. The purpose of better communications was no longer military but rather to reduce emigration. Telford thought this could be done by encouraging crofting and fishing rather than the swing to sheep farming.
