The main traffic on the canal was fishing boats passing from north-east ports to west coast fishing grounds to pursue the herring shoals as they migrated round the Scottish coast from west to east. It is increasingly used by pleasure craft. The canal runs along a geological fault line, connecting three inland lochs to the sea lochs at either end. Construction began in 1803 and it opened to traffic in 1822. The final cost was an enormous £1.3m. By then it was less strategically or economically significant than had been hoped.
