Subject notes
Mallaig became one of the biggest herring fishing ports in Europe. It was created by the arrival of the West Highland Railway in 1901 which allowed rapid transport of fish landed at Mallaig to the markets in the south. Mallaig was also a port of departure for Skye and the Small Isles of Muck, Eigg, Canna and Rum. Excursion boats also sailed from Mallaig and boats came in from houses and estates in remote parts of the coast inaccessible by road.
