Subject notes
Many of these houses would originally have thatched roofs. The flat land on which the township lies is probably a raised beach, cut by the sea when the sea level was some 8 metres higher than it is now. Crofting was largely a subsistence form of farming. Now it produces income from the sale of sheep, beef cattle and subsidies. Increasingly, crofters combine working their croft with some other paid employment.
