Subject notes
Many people were moved from inland glens to the coast as a result of the introduction by landlords of sheep-farming in the 18th and 19th centuries. While in agricultural terms the land was poor, the sea was rich in fish and shellfish. Crofting was largely a subsistence form of farming. Now it produces income from the sale of sheep, beef cattle and subsidies. Increasingly, crofters combine working their croft with some other paid employment.
