Subject notes
For long after the houses were built, the absence of an access road would not be a problem. No-one would own a car and before that, few had carts. People had few possessions and what they had rarely needed to be transported anywhere. Sea was the easiest form of transport. Fishing was carried out mainly for domestic consumption until the later 20th century, partly because land communications were poor compared to Mallaig and Kyle of Lochalsh which were railheads.
