Subject notes
The house is typical of 19th and early 20th century houses. Only as incomes rose and the cost of transport fell (due to the steamship) could ordinary people in the Highlands afford slate roofs. Even then, often corrugated iron was used as a cheaper alternative. The cottage was called 'Druim na Darach' or 'bank of oaks'. Good quality thatch was wind and rain proof and lasted for several years. When it was replaced, the old thatch could be used as fertiliser on the fields.
