Subject notes
A location next to a stream was valuable as originally there would be no piped water. The cottage was called 'Druim na Darach' or 'bank of oaks'. The name may suggest the area was more wooded in the past. The house is typical of 19th and early 20th century croft houses. Good quality thatch was wind and rain proof and lasted for several years. When it was replaced, the old thatch could be used as fertiliser on the fields.
